Working the Dead Beat: Obits from Sir Andrew’s day to Social Media. – Sandra Martin

July 25 @ 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Enjoy a Sunday lunch at the Homestead followed by an interesting talk. These events are part of our fundraising as well as our educational mandate.

Sandra Martin is a journalist who has written many obituaries for the Globe & Mail. Here she describes herself a bit:

In 1998 I took a full time job at The Globe and Mail. For the next 16 years I wrote editorials, cultural analysis, literary profiles, news features and obituaries. People laughed and called me the grim reaper or the angel of death when I started writing obituaries but I loved trying to condense an entire life onto a newspaper page and learning new subject areas from politics to science. Curiosity drives all journalists and I loved discovering fascinating details about strangers, people who were a mystery to me until I began researching their lives and writing them up, usually under crushing deadlines.”

Sandra has spoken at the Homestead before and is an informed and engaging speaker. Her grandmother was Sir Andrew’s youngest sister!

The lunch will start at 12:30 and the lecture will begin once everyone has eaten, around 2:30. Menu options:

  • Orwell Salad (Our favourite salad with small potatoes, green beans, boiled egg, mature cheddar, tomato and red onion tossed in home-made pesto.)
  • “The Master’s” Chicken Salad Ciabatta (with pecans, green onion, red pepper and mayo) served with a salad.
  • Mistress Catherine’s Fish Cakes (A Maritime favourite, served with salad, baked beans and chow).
