The bilingual club (1890-1966), which was “the open mike” event of its era, brought together literary and visual
artists, including portrait painter Robert Harris, humorist Stephen Leacock, poet John McCrae, and essayist
journalist and memoirist Sir Andrew Macphail. The exclusively male club, which fostered friendships between
cultures and disciplines, met every two weeks in the “cold months” for lively and often boozy exchanges. Sir
Andrew played a leading role as a presenter, an editor, and a mentor of other members in Canada’s nascent
social, political and cultural life until his death in 1938.
