The very bright and gifted Eliza MacKenzie of Flat River PEI attended PWC in Charlottetown for a couple of
years, taught school in Pinette, but decided that she wanted to do more in life for the people of PEI. In 1904
she graduated from Dalhousie with a degree in medicine and by 1906 she as the first female doctor on PEI
established her practice on Kent St. in Charlottetown. But the people did not come. Day after day she waited
but to no avail. Rejected by the people of her home province come hear a talk given by Katherine to learn
what she did the rest of her life.
Speaker Bio: Katherine Dewar, a nurse educator for many years, has in her retirement, indulged in her passion for
historical research. She has five books to her credit, four of which deal with Island history. Seeing an absence of women’s stories in the historiography of PEI she took on the challenge of remedying
that omission. Her last three books have dealt with the military women of PEI. The last war alone produced
almost eight hundred.
